We use full grain USA vegetable tanned leather for most of our goods.
Full grain leather is the strongest and most durable grade of leather. It is uncorrected, meaning it has not been buffed or sanded, which keeps the strength of the leather intact. This also means that natural characteristics from the animal will be displayed and are proof of the integrity of the grain. It is the highest grade of leather.
Other grades of leather include:
Top grain - also known as corrected grain. This is buffed to remove imperfections.
Split leather - leather with no grain present, it is the underside that has been removed during the splitting process
Vegetable tanned leather, or veg tan, is leather that is tanned using traditional tanning methods typically with bark tannins being one of the main ingredients in the tanning solution.
Tanning is the process of transforming a raw hide into leather. Veg tan leather is tanned using natural ingredients like bark tannins, whereas "chrome" tanned leather uses chemicals like chromium salts in their tanning solutions.
Vegetable tanned leather can take up to two months for the tanning cycle to be complete, whereas chrome tanned leather can complete the tanning process in as little as a day.
If you are looking for rugged, durability and longevity, veg tan leather is the way to go.
The majority of our hardware in our products are PVD plated solid brass, sourced from the USA.
Wool has an incredible number of benefits. It is highly breathable, regulates temperature, wicks moisture, is odour resistant, is warm when wet, has a high heat to weight ratio, flame resistant, and is a natural material. It speaks for itself when it comes to use in the outdoors.
